Director David Lowery has revealed that Taylor Swift’s Reputation concert film served as a key inspiration for the concert sequences in his upcoming A24 film ‘Mother Mary’, starring Anne Hathaway.
Hathaway plays the titular pop star, a larger-than-life performer who retreats from touring to reconnect with an old friend and fashion designer, played by Michaela Coel. The film also features original music by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX, with a supporting cast including FKA twigs, Hunter Schafer and Kaia Gerber.
Lowery explained to Empire that the Reputation film helped the team visualise a stadium show on an independent film budget. “We took three songs from Reputation and broke them down shot by shot to see what we could achieve within our visual effects budget. It became our guide for the concert scenes,” he said.
The director also noted Hathaway’s admiration for Swift, sharing that she gifted him a beaded bracelet with “Anti-Hero” on it, referencing Swift’s lead single from ‘Midnights’. Lowery added that both he and Hathaway attended a Swift Eras Tour show in Europe.
Mother Mary opens in limited release on April 17 and expands widely on April 24.
