Whether you are a fan or a hater, summer has arrived once more with its blazing sun and its heavy humidity in the air. And with all the seasonal joys and inevitable discomforts it brings, it is undeniable that staying fresh becomes more than just a matter of comfort in this season. It becomes essential for our overall wellbeing during this time.
After all, the rising temperatures causes excessive sweating, oily skin, stronger body odour, dehydration and an increased risk of fungal and bacterial infections occur. In a country like Bangladesh which can get hot during this season, maintaining proper hygiene is even more important in protecting one’s health.
“During summer, the skin becomes more vulnerable due to constant exposure to heat, sweat and pollution,” said Dr Pronami Roy, a dermatologist in Green Life Medical College and Hospital. “Sweat itself is not a harmful thing but when it mixes with dirt and bacteria, it can clog pores and lead to conditions like acne, rashes and infections. That is why it is very important to regularly cleanse and wash your skin.”
Hydration plays a crucial role in summer. “People often underestimate how much water their body needs in summer. The thing is, your body loses more fluids than usual through sweat in this season,” noted Dr Pronami. “Drinking enough water is the key for maintaining both the internal health and a healthy skin. Dehydration can make the skin appear dull and sick while also affecting your overall energy levels.”
One of the most common issues people face in summer is heat rash which is caused by blocked sweat glands. Wearing light, breathable fabrics such as cotton and linen can help the skin breathe and reduce irritation. “Showering every day is a must in summer, especially after coming home from outside. It helps to wash away the sweat, dust and pollutants that accumulate in your skin throughout the day,” added Dr Pronami.
It is also recommended to pay extra attention to the underarms, groin and feet during the showers as these areas are especially prone to sweat buildup, bacterial growth and unpleasant odour.
Another overlooked aspect of summer hygiene is foot hygiene. Closed and sweaty footwear can create the perfect environment for fungal infections. Keeping feet clean and dry and opting for open or breathable shoes can significantly reduce these risks. Similarly, maintaining scalp hygiene is also important as sweat and oil buildup can lead to dandruff, itching and a lot of other scalp issues.
While many people use heavy fragrances or chemical-based products to combat body odour, Dr Pronami suggests a more balanced approach to this. “Overusing harsh or heavy fragrances can sometimes do more harm than good. So, it is better to just focus on cleanliness and use mild, skin-friendly products,” she explained.
Ultimately, maintaining summer hygiene does not require anything extravagant and nor should it feel difficult. It is all about small, consistent habits that help keep your body and mind fresh every day. In a season that can easily feel draining and overwhelming, these mindful choices can go a long way in keeping one comfortable and confident. Sometimes, staying well is as easy as staying clean, cool and mindful.
