Houses of the two accused were attacked and vandalised following the killing of a 15-year-old boy who was allegedly drowned during an argument while bathing in a pond in Gaibandha Sadar upazila.
The incident took place on Wednesday morning in North Harin Singha village under Ramchandrapur union of the upazila, where enraged family members and relatives of the deceased launched an attack on the homes of the accused.
According to local sources, around 8am, the victim’s family and relatives, armed with bamboo sticks and locally made weapons, attacked and vandalised the residences. They broke into the houses, destroyed furniture, utensils and other household items, and threw them into a nearby pond.
They later attempted to set fire to the properties, but were prevented by locals and neighbouring residents. The houses of Joban Ali and later Saidul Islam were targeted during the attack.
The Officer-in-Charge of Gaibandha Sadar Police Station, Abdullah Al Mamun, said police had been deployed to the scene.
Earlier, the incident occurred on Tuesday at a large pond near Hawai Dighir Mor, where three teenagers Sakib (15), Rifat (15) and Rahat (15) went to bathe. At one stage during bathing, an argument broke out among them. Sakib and Rifat allegedly held Rahat underwater repeatedly, resulting in his death.
Both accused fled the scene immediately after the incident. Locals later took Rahat to Gaibandha General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Police later recovered the body following information from locals.
The accused have been identified as Sakib, son of Joban Ali, and Rifat, son of Saidul Islam, both from the same locality.
