Jordan Henderson will miss the rest of the 2026 World Cup after suffering a freak injury during England’s celebrations against Mexico.
The 36 year old midfielder broke his wrist after England’s 3-2 win in the round of 16 at the Estadio Azteca. Henderson did not play in the match but joined his teammates after the final whistle to celebrate with the England fans.
The injury happened when he tried to climb over an advertising board. Henderson lost his balance and fell badly.
England’s medical team quickly came to help him. He was then taken to hospital for tests. The tests confirmed a broken wrist, which has ended his tournament.
Henderson is expected to have surgery in the coming days.
England coach Thomas Tuchel said the injury was painful news after a big win.
“I’m sad because it does not fit in with the evening,” Tuchel said. “It’s quite a serious injury to his wrist.”
England captain Harry Kane and midfielder Jude Bellingham also showed support for Henderson after the accident. Bellingham said the whole squad gathered around him while doctors treated him.
Henderson played only six minutes at this World Cup. His only appearance came in England’s 2 0 group stage win over Panama.
He was an unused substitute against Mexico before the accident ended his campaign.
England will now face Norway in the quarterfinals without one of their most experienced players.
