Continuous heavy rainfall over the past three days has caused severe waterlogging in several low-lying areas of Khagrachhari district, with rivers, streams and canals swelling rapidly.
The adverse weather conditions, which intensified on Tuesday morning with an intermittent drizzles and heavy downpours, have inundated residential houses and major roads, causing immense suffering for residents in low-lying areas.
Several low-lying areas in the Khagrachhari town, including Muslim Para, North Ganjpara, and parts of Mehedibagh, are currently underwater.
In Mahalchhari upazila, the Maischhari Bazar area has also been flooded.
Furthermore, road communications have been severely hampered as sections of the Dighinala and Longadu roads were submerged, bringing vehicular movement to a partial standstill.
Authorities have expressed growing concerns regarding potential small-scale landslides due to the continuous saturation of hilly terrain.
In response, the local administration has intensified its activity in high-risk areas as part of precautionary measures.
The district administration has already opened shelters to accommodate families affected by waterlogging and rising water levels.
Officials are currently identifying and listing families living in landslide-prone areas to facilitate their immediate relocation to safer grounds.
Khagrachari Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anwar Sadat said that comprehensive disaster management measures are already in place.
“All necessary awareness and disaster response steps have been taken for the time being,” he said.
The DC added that further actions would be determined based on the evolving weather forecast
