Heavy rain likely in parts of Bangladesh: BMD

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty winds and lightning, in many parts of the country over the next 24 hours starting from 9am on Friday.

According to the forecast, moderately heavy to heavy rainfall is likely at places over Rangpur, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions during this period.

It added that light to moderate rain or thundershowers with gusty winds and lightning flashes may occur at many places in Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, and at a few places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions.

Day temperatures may rise slightly across the country, while night temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.

The highest rainfall in the 24 hours to 6am on Friday was recorded at 72mm in Sylhet.

The BMD said the monsoon trough currently extends from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal to the centre of a low-pressure system over Assam, passing across the southern part of Bangladesh.

It added that the monsoon remains fairly active over Bangladesh and moderate to strong over the North Bay.
