The High Court (HC) has issued a rule asking authorities to explain why the registration of domestic workers should not be made mandatory across the country, including the capital.

The bench of Justice Razik-Al-Jalil and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury issued the rule on Sunday.

The court directed the Law Secretary, Labour Secretary, and other concerned officials to respond within four weeks.

Lawyer Tanzim Al Islam appeared in court on behalf of the petitioner, assisted by lawyers Khadizatul Kobra and Rowshon Ara.

Earlier on 13 January, a writ petition was filed seeking directives for the registration of all domestic workers in Dhaka and across Bangladesh.
Following a preliminary hearing on the petition, the High Court issued the rule.
