In response to the International Crimes Tribunal’s verdict against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her aides for crimes against humanity, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has said that it reaffirms the principle that no one is above the law.
He said this in a press statement issued after the court handed out the verdict on Monday.
The chief adviser said, “This verdict and punishment have reaffirmed a fundamental principle: no one is above the law, no matter how powerful. For the thousands affected by the mass uprising of July 2024 and the families still bearing those scars, this verdict has brought a measure of justice, however limited.”
He added, “We are standing at a juncture to rebuild the democratic foundations shattered by years of oppression. These heinous acts struck at the core values of Bangladesh: dignity, resilience, and a commitment to justice.”
Touching upon the 1,400 lives lost during the July Uprising, he added, “They are not just numbers; they were our students, guardians, and citizens with rights. This verdict acknowledges their suffering and reaffirms the assurance of accountability for perpetrators within our justice system.”
Saying that Monday’s verdict was a crucial step on Bangladesh’s journey of progress, Yunus concluded, “I firmly believe that Bangladesh will face the challenges ahead with courage and humility. Through the rule of law, human rights, and a commitment to the potential of every individual, justice in Bangladesh will not merely survive in name; it will be established and strengthened.”
