The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has set 24 February to hear a prosecution appeal seeking the death penalty for ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

The appeal challenges an earlier verdict that sentenced the two to imprisonment until death for crimes against humanity.

Chamber Justice Md Rezaul Huq fixed the hearing date on Sunday after the application appeared on the Chamber Court cause list, with Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam representing the prosecution.

The prosecution filed the appeal with the relevant branch of the Appellate Division on 15 December, citing eight grounds for seeking capital punishment instead of imprisonment until death.

Earlier, on 17 November, International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced both Hasina and Kamal to death on one charge and to imprisonment until death on another.
