Bayern Munich completed a domestic double after beating VfB Stuttgart 3-0 in the German Cup final on Saturday. Harry Kane starred in the win with a second half hat-trick. It gave Bayern their first league and cup double in six years.

Kane opened the scoring in the 55th minute. He rose highest to head in a perfect cross from Michael Olise. The England captain then added his second goal with 10 minutes left in the match. He completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot in stoppage time.

The striker is in top form before next month’s World Cup. He became only the third player to score in every round of the German Cup, including the final. Kane has now scored 61 goals in 51 matches across all competitions this season.

“Maybe a bit of patience,” Kane said when asked what changed in the game. “The first half was tough. They like the man-to-man pressure. But they started to tire a little bit.”

“In the second half we were a bit more patient with the ball, a bit more quality. We deserved to win.”

“A record-breaking season,” he added. “We wanted to win today. We got the job done today. We wanted the Champions League, an addition we wanted to achieve. But tonight’s win will help this team grow. I am looking forward to next season.”

Bayern struggled early in the game and spent much of the first half under pressure. They found the breakthrough after the break when Kane finished Olise’s cross.

The match stopped briefly around the hour mark after fans from both teams lit flares. Smoke filled the Olympic Stadium and reduced visibility.

Stuttgart almost found a way back in the 76th minute when Chris Fuehrich came close with a header. But Kane ended any hopes of a comeback four minutes later.

The 32 year old first smashed a shot against the crossbar. The ball came back to him after a pass from Luis Diaz. Kane turned quickly inside the box, beat his marker and fired a low shot past Alexander Nuebel.

Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeness praised Kane after the match and called his transfer the best signing in the club’s history.

“To have those types of words, knowing how many great players have played here, it’s special,” Kane said. “I feel like I’m part of club history, scoring three goals in a final.”

Bayern had hoped to win three trophies this season. But they missed out after losing to Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League semi finals. Still, the German Cup win gave them a strong finish to the season.
