The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) accorded a special reception to HAMS Garments Ltd for achieving the world’s highest score among green garment factories under the LEED certification system.
The reception was jointly organised by the BGMEA and HAMS Garments at the Nurul Quader Auditorium of the BGMEA Complex in Uttara on Saturday.
BGMEA Senior Vice-President Inamul Haque Khan handed over a crest to HAMS Garments Managing Director Engineer Shafiqul Rahman in recognition of the achievement.
In his speech, Enamul said the factory secured 108 out of 110 points under the US Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED Platinum certification, setting a new global record.
“This is not just a number. It is currently the highest score achieved by any green factory in the world,” he said, adding that the milestone has elevated the image and capability of the “Made in Bangladesh” brand and set a global benchmark for the country’s apparel sector.
Welcoming the guests, BGMEA Director Faisal Samad congratulated the factory, saying scoring 108 points was a major challenge that the company successfully met.
He also stressed the need to make green technology funds more accessible to support environmentally friendly transformation in the industry.
BGMEA Director Faruque Hassan said Bangladesh has consistently broken its own records in LEED certifications over the past decades, strengthening the industry’s global image.
However, he noted that although green factories often receive order priority, the benefits are not yet properly reflected in product pricing.
USGBC consultant and Managing Director of 360 TSL, Ananta Ahmed, highlighted the technical aspects behind the achievement, saying Bangladesh is not only advancing in sustainability but also creating new global benchmarks.
Speaking at the programme, Shafiqul Rahman shared the factory’s success story and thanked BGMEA for recognising industry achievements.
He said such initiatives would encourage more entrepreneurs to invest in sustainable industrialisation.
Among others, BGMEA Vice-President (Finance) Mizanur Rahman, Director ABM Samsuddin and other officials, along with HAMS directors and senior executives, attended the event.
According to the BGMEA, Bangladesh currently has 273 LEED-certified green factories, including 115 platinum and 139 gold-rated facilities. Of the world’s top 100 highest-rated green garment factories, 69 are in Bangladesh.
