Erling Haaland scored twice as Norway opened their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a convincing 4-1 win over Iraq in Group I at Boston Stadium on Tuesday.
Norway controlled most of the match and made their chances count. Iraq showed spirit and briefly fought back, but the European side proved too strong.
Haaland gave Norway the lead in the 29th minute. David Moller Wolfe sent in a cross and the striker finished from close range.
Iraq responded well. Aymen Hussein brought his team level in the 39th minute with a powerful header from Amir Al Ammari’s cross.
The score stayed level for only a few minutes. Haaland struck again in the 43rd minute after Jalal Hassan saved his first effort. The ball fell kindly for the Norwegian star, who tapped home to restore the lead before halftime.
Iraq started the second half brightly and created a few chances. Aymen Hussein headed wide early in the half, while Hussein Ali also missed from a difficult angle.
Norway remained dangerous on the break and finally added a third goal in the 76th minute. Defender Leo Ostigard rose highest from a Martin Odegaard corner and headed into the net from close range.
The goal ended Iraq’s hopes of a comeback. Norway continued to push forward and nearly added more goals in the closing stages.
Deep into stoppage time, Iraq’s night got worse. Aymen Hussein accidentally turned the ball into his own net while trying to deal with a dangerous attack, giving Norway a fourth goal.
The final whistle confirmed a strong 4-1 win for Norway. Haaland’s brace and Odegaard’s influence helped the Scandinavians make a perfect start to their World Cup journey, while Iraq were left searching for answers after a difficult opening match.
