A Dhaka court on Thursday recorded the testimonies of two witnesses in a corruption case against Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, son of former Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC) driver Syed Abed Ali, over allegations that he acquired assets beyond his known sources of income.
The testimonies were recorded before Dhaka Divisional Special Judge BM Tarikul Kabir.
The prosecution presented two witnesses, including the case’s complainant and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Assistant Director Zakir Hossain, and Mintu Mia.
Court bench assistant Ariful Islam said Mintu Mia’s testimony and cross-examination were completed, while Zakir Hossain’s examination-in-chief was recorded.
Defence lawyer Rezaul Karim sought time to cross-examine the complainant, and the court granted the request.
The court fixed 10 August for the remaining cross-examination of Zakir Hossain and further witness testimony.
Siam, a leader of the now-banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, was brought to court from jail for the hearing.
Siam is the son of Syed Abed Ali Jibon, who came into the spotlight following allegations surrounding the PSC question paper leak scandal.
On 17 June, the same court framed charges against Siam, paving the way for the formal trial.
According to the case statement, the ACC filed the case against Siam on 5 January, 2024, alleging that he accumulated illegal assets worth Tk37.30 lakh between 3 September, 2021, and 30 June, 2024.
After completing the investigation, ACC Assistant Director Zakir Hossain submitted the chargesheet on 30 December, 2024, stating that investigators found Siam had acquired movable and immovable assets worth Tk 31.81 lakh that were disproportionate to his known sources of income.
