Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the government is working with a firm commitment to national unity and nation-building.
He made the remarks while briefing journalists after exchanging Eid greetings with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at Gulshan in the capital on Thursday.
The minister stressed that people from all walks of life must remain united, regardless of political views or differences, in order to build a developed and prosperous Bangladesh.
“Our primary goal and sole slogan is ‘Bangladesh First’. We believe in the principle: we shall work, we shall build the country, Bangladesh First,” he said.
He added that the government aimed to move forward by involving all citizens through a strong sense of national unity.
Mr Ahmed said that since 5 August 2024, people in Bangladesh had been living in a free, independent and peaceful environment. He noted that the country had been fortunate to observe several festive Eids in such an atmosphere, and prayed for continued peace, stability, law and order, and national wellbeing.
On the day’s Eid-ul-Adha observances, the Home Minister said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman visited the graves of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia at Zia Udyan in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar to offer prayers.
They later visited Banani Graveyard, where they paid tribute at the graves of Arafat Rahman Koko, the youngest son of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia, as well as the father of Zubaida Rahman.
During the visit, they also honoured the memory of the military officers of the then BDR (now BGB) and other victims of the Pilkhana massacre, praying for the salvation of the departed souls.
The briefing was attended by State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam and Syed Ibrahim Ahmed, son of the Home Minister and a member of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) ad hoc committee.
