The government has decided to provide Tk2 crore in financial assistance to the family of Inqilab Moncho leader Sharif Osman Hadi, who was shot dead during the election campaign in Dhaka last month.

The support package includes Tk1 crore for purchasing a flat or house in Dhaka and another Tk1 crore to help the family meet livelihood expenses.

Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed disclosed the decision on Wednesday while speaking to reporters after a meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase at the Secretariat.

“One crore taka will be given from the Ministry of Finance for purchasing a flat or house, although the full amount may not be required,” he said.

“Another one crore taka is being provided separately from the Chief Adviser’s Office for the family’s livelihood,” he added.

Asked why additional benefits were being extended despite Hadi’s brother having earlier been appointed to a diplomatic post in the United Kingdom, the finance adviser declined to comment, saying such questions were not for him to answer.

He said the Ministry of Finance had already approved the Tk1 crore allocation for housing purposes.

The finance adviser also chose not to comment on a recent claim by the commerce adviser that rice prices rose by Tk20 per kg due to the Padma Bridge.

“I do not think anything,” he said.

Hadi was shot in the head by assailants on 12 December during an election campaign programme in the capital’s Purana Paltan area.

After receiving initial treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Evercare Hospital, he was flown to Singapore for advanced medical care on 15 December, where he died on 18 December.
