The government plans to bring highways across the country under CCTV monitoring to reduce road accidents, Shaikh Rabiul Alam, Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping, said on Monday.
He made the remarks after a discussion with Deputy Commissioners on the second day of the DC Conference at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital.
The minister said the initiative will begin with highways. It will later expand to regional roads and eventually to district-level roads.
He noted “Road accidents claim between 4,500 and 5,000 lives every year across the country.”
“This is very unfortunate. We have not been able to ensure their safety,” he added.
The minister said there are instructions to stop three-wheelers and other slow-moving vehicles on highways.
He added that land acquisition is required for various government projects. For this, cooperation from Deputy Commissioners is essential. Necessary instructions have been given to ensure such support.
