Govt removes Biman MD Safiqur over child abuse

The government has removed Mohammad Safiqur Rahman from his post as Managing Director (MD) and CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines after he was arrested and sent to jail in a case involving the alleged abuse of a child domestic worker.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism announced the decision in an office order issued on Tuesday.

According to the order, Safiqur Rahman’s contract-based appointment has been cancelled as he is currently in custody in connection with a criminal case.

To ensure the smooth and effective management of the national flag carrier, the ministry has assigned Additional Secretary Humaira Sultana (Aviation and CA) to take charge of the MD’s responsibilities until a new appointment is made.

The order said Humaira Sultana will perform the duties as an additional responsibility alongside her current role.

Safiqur Rahman was arrested at around 3am on Monday from a residence in Uttara along with his wife and two domestic workers over allegations of inhuman torture of a child domestic help.

They were later sent to jail by court order.
