In a decisive move to address the rising issue of sexual violence, the government has directed all ministries and agencies to launch a coordinated initiative aimed at tackling rape and women’s abuse cases.
This action has been prioritised as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence.
The decision was made during a cabinet meeting held on Tuesday at the secretariat.
Cabinet Secretary Md Nasimul Gani confirmed the directive, saying that the government has decided to conduct a special drive to expedite the investigation and prosecution of both current and previous rape cases.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman chaired the meeting, which was held on a public holiday at 2pm.
In a briefing following the meeting, Nasimul Gani explained, “The cabinet has made a suo moto decision to launch a special drive with the collective involvement of all ministries to ensure quick action on rape cases. This initiative aims to eliminate such crimes from society and ensure prompt legal action.”
The cabinet secretary also highlighted the importance of inter-agency cooperation, stating, “Many different agencies are involved in these cases, and we have instructed them to coordinate effectively.”
In addition to the drive, the government has decided to strengthen the capacity of special courts in each district to speed up the judicial process for rape and women’s abuse cases. This intensified focus will also be maintained during the Eid period.
Nasimul Gani noted that this initiative is part of the government’s broader priority agenda, with the issue being discussed and addressed during the cabinet meeting.
