Ministry of Finance has agreed to raise the rent allowance for teachers of private MPO (Monthly Pay Order)-listed institutions by 5 percent of their basic salary or a minimum of Tk 2,000, starting from November.

The announcement was made through a letter from the Ministry of Finance to the Ministry of Education sent on Sunday morning. Education Ministry’s Public Relations Officer confirms the development.

This comes after teachers initiated a movement demanding an increase in rent allowance by 20 percent of their basic salary, along with Tk 1,500 for medical expenses and a 75 percent increase in festival allowances for employees. The teachers began their protests on Sunday, and after facing police dispersal in front of the National Press Club, they continued their sit-in at the Central Shaheed Minar.

On Wednesday, protesting teachers blocked the road in front of the High Court, and on Thursday, they staged a protest at Shahbagh. On Friday, after Jumu’ah prayers, some of the teachers began an indefinite hunger strike along with their sit-in.

On Saturday afternoon, they carried out a black flag procession from the Central Shaheed Minar to the High Court area.
