The interim government has formed a new pay commission to revise the salary structure of public sector employees. Former Finance Secretary Zakir Ahmed Khan has been appointed as the chairman of the commission.
The decision was made on Thursday during a meeting of the Advisory Council, chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. The commission has been directed to submit its final report with recommendations within six months, confirmed by the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.
Currently, government employees receive salaries based on the 2015 pay scale. Bangladesh has around 1.5 million public sector officers and employees.
The formation of the new pay commission became necessary as real incomes have declined due to prolonged high inflation. According to the government, the initiative has been taken in view of the current economic situation to ensure a better standard of living and purchasing power for public servants.
