The government has broken its promise to the people by increasing electricity prices within just three months of assuming power, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar has said.
“Just a few days ago, leaders of the ruling party announced that they would not increase electricity prices for two years. Yet within three months, the government has gone back on that word,” Porwar said on Thursday afternoon.
He made the remarks as chief guest at a protest rally organised by Metropolitan Jamaat against the increase in electricity and fuel oil prices in the capital’s Baitul Mukarram area.
“The people will not accept this whimsical decision of the government under any circumstances. Following the sudden increase in fuel oil and electricity prices, the cost of everything will rise. The public will have to bear the brunt of this suffering,” he said.
Porwar further alleged that irregularities and corruption are happening everywhere. “Instead of increasing electricity and fuel oil prices, irregularities and corruption must be stopped. Otherwise, people will take to the streets at some point.”
The Jamaat secretary general called upon the government to immediately withdraw the increased prices of electricity and oil.
Central and metropolitan leaders of the party also spoke at the rally.
