The government has approved the procurement of eight cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) through direct international sourcing to meet the country’s immediate gas requirements amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The approval was given at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.
According to the briefing document presented at the meeting, the Energy and Mineral Resources Division submitted three separate proposals seeking approval to procure LNG to address the country’s emergency gas needs.
Under the first proposal, the committee approved the purchase of four LNG cargoes through direct procurement from Zhenyu Shipping Co., Limited, Hong Kong, and PETRONAS LNG Ltd., Malaysia.
The committee also cleared the procurement of two cargoes from China Runze Holdings Group Limited through the direct international procurement process.
In another decision, the committee approved the direct purchase of two additional LNG cargoes from DARAB Inc., USA.
With these three approvals, Bangladesh will procure a total of eight LNG cargoes to address its immediate gas supply requirements.
The move comes as Bangladesh seeks to maintain an uninterrupted gas supply amid heightened geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East and growing pressure on global energy markets.
The CCEA also considered two other proposals submitted by the Ministry of Shipping and the Ministry of Social Welfare, according to the official briefing document.
