A total of 265 lawyers have been appointed as law officers to represent the state before the Supreme Court. The appointments include 86 deputy attorneys general and 179 assistant attorneys general.
By order of the president, solicitor wing of Law and Justice Division under the Ministry of Law issued separate notifications regarding these appointments on Thursday.
The notifications were signed by Solicitor Sana Md Mahroof Hossain. Under these orders, the appointments of all previously appointed law officers have been cancelled.
With these latest appointments, the total number of law officers representing the state at the highest court now stands at 269, including the attorney general and three additional attorneys general.
Previously, on 3 January, TIMES of Bangladesh published a report titled “Attorney General’s Office: A Political Rehab Centre” concerning the excessive number of law officers. At that time, there were 335 state law officers in post.
The report said such a high number of law officers at the Attorney General’s Office is unprecedented in the history of Bangladeshi judiciary.
Under the fallen Awami League government, the number stood at slightly over 200, which was also considered unprecedented and far beyond what was required.
