The government has allowed the import of liquefied petroleum gas on credit to help ease supply disruptions and stabilise the market.

Bangladesh Bank said in a circular on Monday that LPG may now be imported on buyers’ or suppliers’ credit from domestic banks’ offshore banking units as well as from foreign banks and financial institutions.

The central bank clarified that LPG imported on credit will be treated as an industrial raw material. The move, it said, aims to ensure a steady supply of cylinder gas.

In the circular, Bangladesh Bank noted that LPG is typically imported in bulk and later bottled into cylinders for household use. Local importers require time after shipment to complete storage, bottling and related operational processes.

Against this backdrop, the central bank said LPG would qualify as an eligible industrial input for imports under buyers’ or suppliers’ credit. The maximum credit tenor will be 270 days.

On 29 December, Bangladesh Bank had issued a circular allowing a 270-day usance period for imports of industrial raw materials. Under the latest decision, LPG importers will now enjoy the same deferred payment facility.
