After weeks of record-breaking price hikes, gold prices in Bangladesh have been reduced by Tk 8,386 per bhori, following a decline in the rate of pure gold in the local market, the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) announced on Wednesday.
Effective from Thursday, the price of 22-carat gold jewellery will drop to Tk 208,995 per bhori (11.664 grams), down from the all-time high of Tk 217,381, which was recorded just three days earlier on 19 October.
The decision to revise the prices came during a meeting of the BAJUS executive committee held on Wednesday, the association said in an official press release.
As per the new pricing structure 21-carat gold is priced at Tk 199,501 per bhori, 18-carat gold at Tk 170,994, and gold crafted using the traditional method will now cost Tk 142,219 per bhori.
BAJUS also noted that the final retail price must include 5% VAT, as mandated by the government, along with a minimum 6% making charge set by the association. However, the making charge may vary depending on the design and quality of the jewellery.
Gold prices in the country have been on a relentless upward trajectory in recent months, setting new records almost weekly.
In September alone, 22-carat gold surged by more than Tk 16,000 per bhori, driven largely by volatility in the international bullion market, the depreciation of the Taka, economic uncertainty, and rising inflation.
Though Bangladesh does not directly import large volumes of gold, local prices remain tightly linked to international market movements.
According to the Gold Policy 2018, the country’s annual demand for gold ranges between 20 and 40 tonnes.
The price of gold in Bangladesh has more than quadrupled over the past seven years. In January 2018, gold crossed Tk 50,000 per bhori for the first time. It hit Tk 100,000 in July 2023, jumped to Tk 150,000 in February 2025, and surpassed the Tk 200,000 mark shortly thereafter.
Industry insiders expect price fluctuations to continue in the coming months, depending on global market trends and macroeconomic conditions.
