Cape Verde reached the World Cup round of 32 after a 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia in Houston on Friday secured second place in Group H. Tournament debutants advanced with three points from three draws and will now face Argentina in the knockout stage.
Spain claimed top spot with seven points after beating Uruguay 1-0, while both Uruguay and Saudi Arabia exited the tournament on two points.
Cape Verde entered the final group match knowing a point could prove enough and approached the game with greater purpose. They controlled more of the attacking play and carried the stronger threat around the penalty area, but their finishing let them down.
Their clearest opportunity fell to Laros Duarte after he broke through one-on-one with Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Alowais. Duarte had space and time to finish, but Alowais spread himself well and pushed the effort away.
Cape Verde regularly moved the ball into wide areas and looked to stretch Saudi Arabia’s back line, yet they lacked the final pass and composure inside the box.
Saudi Arabia struggled to build momentum through midfield and rarely threatened in attack. They created little urgency despite needing a result and finished the group stage with only one goal from three matches.
The game lacked rhythm for long periods and clear openings remained scarce, but Cape Verde stayed organised and protected the result they needed.
Their World Cup journey now moves into the knockout stage against Argentina. They arrived at the tournament with little expectation from outside the camp, but they now carry one of the competition’s most unusual stories into the last 32.
