US President Donald Trump on Friday warned that European nations adopting a digital services tax would face a 100 percent tariff, declaring that existing trade agreements would be nullified.
“Any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account, adding that “this TARIFF will supersede Trade Deals made with the Country, whether implemented, signed, or not.”
The threat came just a day after EU member states approved a trade pact negotiated last year with Washington, which limits duties on European imports to 15 per cent, AFP reports.
Trump has repeatedly signaled his intent to challenge non-tariff barriers, targeting European rules on technology and environmental standards that he argues obstruct American exports.
Earlier this month, he threatened to impose a 100 percent tariff on French wine and champagne unless Paris withdrew its digital services tax.
France introduced the levy in 2019, applying a three-percent charge on revenues earned within its borders by major technology companies, including Facebook, Amazon, Apple, and Google’s parent Alphabet.
