Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has stated that Generation Z (Gen-Z) does not have a proper knowledge of the nation’s history.
He made the remarks on Saturday while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion marking Teliapara Day, an event associated with the memories of the Liberation War. The meeting was presided over by Habiganj District Muktijoddha Sangsad Unit Command Convener Golam Mostafa Rafiq.
The minister said the “fascist government” over the past 15 years had prevented young people from learning the true history of the country.
“Former President Ziaur Rahman declared the country’s independence, after which members of the military joined the struggle, leading to a people’s war involving citizens from all walks of life,” he said.
He also said the Liberation War was not fought under the sole leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, adding that he had gone to Pakistan at that time.
“This is the real history,” he said.
Fakhrul described former prime minister Khaleda Zia as the first female freedom fighter of the country and criticised political elements for attempting to deny the significance of the Liberation War.
“The Liberation War is the mirror and existence of the BNP,” he said.
He added that the BNP was the first to initiate reform demands and recalled that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia had presented “Vision 2030” in 2016 to transform the state system. He said the party is currently working towards state reforms.
The event was presided over by Habiganj District Muktijoddha Sangsad Unit Command Convener Golam Mostafa Rafiq.
Among others, Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan and State Minister Ishraque Hossain also spoke at the discussion, alongside political leaders.
