Warner Bros. is reportedly developing a feature film set in the universe of ‘Game of Thrones’, marking the first planned big-screen adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world.
According to Hollywoodmedia reports, the project will centre on Aegon I Targaryen and his legendary conquest of Westeros. The screenplay is said to be in the hands of Beau Willimon, known for his work on ‘Andor’ and ‘House of Cards’. The film is being conceived as a large-scale cinematic epic.
In Martin’s mythology, Aegon and his sister-wives arrived in Westeros with three dragons, uniting six of the Seven Kingdoms and reshaping the continent’s political order.
The origins of the Targaryen dynasty are chronicled in Martin’s companion book Fire and Blood, parts of which inspired HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon’. The proposed film would be set roughly 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones and more than a century prior to House of the Dragon.
Casting details and a release timeline have yet to be announced.
The idea of taking the franchise to cinemas has circulated before. In 2013, series creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss floated the possibility of concluding the original show with feature films, though HBO ultimately opted to finish the story on television.
Despite corporate uncertainty surrounding Warner Bros’ future ownership, the Game of Thrones franchise remains a key asset. The original series, which aired from 2011 to 2019, became a global phenomenon and one of the most decorated dramas in television history.
HBO continues to expand the universe, with House of the Dragon returning for a third season and ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ also in development.
