The fuel oil price hike will directly put increasing pressure on the prices of essential commodities and the cost of living, plunging ordinary people into deeper crisis, Islami Andolan Bangladesh leaders have said.
In a statement on Sunday, the party’s Dhaka Metropolitan South acting president Maulana Ahmed Abdul Qayyum and secretary Md Abdul Awal Majumdar said the decision is not justice for the people at a time when they are already struggling under the burden of high commodity prices.
“The process through which the previous fascist government operated this sector is a continuation of that. As a democratic government, it should have considered certain analyses and assessments, but the government has failed,” the leaders said.
They noted that after the ceasefire in the Middle East war, global oil prices gradually fell from $120 to $90 per barrel, yet the government has increased prices domestically.
“Even though the government claims there are fuel oil reserves, the people are not benefiting from them. People are burning in this heatwave while standing in lines on the roads. With this kind of price hike, what benefit does the government want to provide to the people?” they questioned.
Islami Andolan leaders said the government has failed to alleviate public suffering, including implementing the referendum verdict, resolving the fuel crisis, and controlling commodity prices.
