Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir held a meeting with Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Ajit Singh on Sunday to strengthen trade, investment and economic cooperation between the two countries.
The meeting took place at the minister’s office at the Secretariat, where both sides discussed key aspects of bilateral relations.
The commerce minister said the government is giving special importance to attracting local and foreign investment in the renewable energy sector. He said the government has already started work to generate 10,000 megawatts of solar power.
He assured that necessary policy and institutional support will be provided to investors in this sector. He also invited Canadian entrepreneurs to invest in Bangladesh’s solar power sector.
High Commissioner Ajit Singh highlighted the strong existing relations between Bangladesh and Canada. He said there is significant potential to expand trade and investment between the two countries.
He noted that a large number of Bangladeshi expatriates live in Canada and contribute significantly to both economies.
He also said Canadian investors are interested in investing in Bangladesh’s agri-food, fintech and renewable energy sectors, particularly solar power.
He expressed hope that expanding trade will further strengthen the friendly relations between the two countries.
Additional Secretary (Export) of the Ministry of Commerce Md Abdur Rahim Khan and Additional Secretary (IIT) Shibir Bichitra Barua were present at the meeting.
