A Dhaka court has placed Shahed Ahmed Majumder, son of former state minister for Industries and former MP for Dhaka-15 constituency Kamal Majumder, on a five-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
On Sunday, Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziadur Rahman passed the order at a hearing.
The accused was produced before the court and with investigating officer of the case Gulshan Police Station’s Sub-Inspector Md Abdus Salam applying for a 10-day remand. The accused’s lawyer Babul Akhter Babu applied for bail, seeking cancellation of the remand. Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi opposed it. After hearing both sides, the court placed the accused on a five-day remand.
Earlier, on Saturday, the police’s Counter Terrorism Unit arrested him from a house in the Niketan area of Gulshan, Dhaka, at around 10pm.
According to the case statement, on September 12 at around 1:30pm, leaders and activists of the Awami League and its student wing Chhatra League held a procession on the bridge on the south side of Dr Fazle Rabbi Park.
During the procession, they chanted provocative slogans to destabilise the state, the report states. During this time, the protesters created fear in the public by trying to vandalise vehicles on the road. Later, Gulshan Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Mahbub Hossain filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009.
Former state minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder was arrested on October 19, 2024. He is currently in prison as an accused in multiple murder cases linked to the July uprising.
After the political change in August 2024, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) began an investigation against Kamal Ahmed Majumder. After the investigation, the ACC filed two cases against Kamal Ahmed Majumder and his son Shahed Ahmed Majumder on charges of acquiring wealth illegally.
