Fans of classic Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs) have a new adventure to explore, as Forge of the Fae is now available to try for free through a playable demo on Steam ahead of its full release, reports Screen Rant.
Developed by indie studio Datadyne, the upcoming title combines retro-inspired visuals, turn-based combat and story-driven gameplay, drawing inspiration from genre-defining classics such as Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger and The Legend of Zelda.
While the full game is expected to launch in 2027, PC players can already experience the opening hours through a free Steam demo.
Described as a “story-rich pixel RPG inspired by Celtic folklore,” Forge of the Fae follows the traditions of classic JRPGs with strategic turn-based battles, party progression and an expansive fantasy world filled with mythical creatures, political intrigue and ancient secrets.
Players can explore handcrafted forests, villages and dungeons rooted in Irish mythology while taking on quests, solving puzzles and interacting with a colourful cast of characters.
Beyond its Final Fantasy-style combat, the game also borrows exploration elements from The Legend of Zelda, while its cosy pixel-art towns and charming NPCs evoke the atmosphere of Stardew Valley.
Although the demo doesn’t include the complete experience, it offers several hours of gameplay, giving players a chance to sample the game’s combat, exploration and storytelling before deciding whether to purchase the full release.
The demo is currently available exclusively on Steam.
Earlier this year, Datadyne successfully funded the project through Kickstarter, where supporters could secure a digital copy for as little as $18.
Higher pledge tiers included collector’s rewards, early access and opportunities for backers to collaborate directly with the developers by designing NPCs, enemies and other in-game content.
The crowdfunding campaign has since concluded, meaning prospective players can now only wishlist the game while waiting for launch.
Although the demo is currently PC-exclusive, Forge of the Fae is planned for release on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and macOS alongside its Steam version when it launches in 2027.
For RPG fans eager to revisit the charm of 16-bit adventures while exploring a fresh world inspired by Celtic mythology, the free demo offers an early glimpse of one of the more intriguing indie JRPGs currently in development.
