Two children died after being swept away by strong currents of flash floods in Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram on Friday morning.
The incidents occurred around 11:30am at separate locations in Baharchhara Union.
The deceased were identified as Ashiq, son of Kamal Uddin from South Ilsha village, and Miraj, a resident of the Ratnapur area.
According to family members and local residents, the children were playing in the courtyards of their respective homes when they were suddenly caught in powerful currents of water flowing down from the nearby hills.
Locals rescued the children and rushed them to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
The deaths have cast a shadow of grief over the families and the local community. Neighbours described the loss of the two children as devastating. Heavy rainfall over the past few days has triggered flash floods in several parts of the upazila, including Baharchhara, creating dangerous water currents.
Banshkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rabiul Haque confirmed the deaths and expressed condolences to the bereaved families. He said necessary legal procedures were being followed regarding the incidents.
The OC also urged parents and guardians in flood-affected areas to remain alert and keep children in safe places during heavy rainfall to prevent further tragedies.
