A Mymensingh court on Wednesday handed down life imprisonment to five people for the killing of a man over a land dispute in 2023.
Mymensingh District and Sessions Judge Farhana Ferdous delivered the verdict. Each convict was also fined Tk50,000, with a default clause of six months’ additional rigorous imprisonment.
The sentenced are Abdur Rashid, 41, son of Shukkur Ali; Jashim Uddin, 50; his wife Hurena Khatun; their son Riyad, 25; and Jonaki Akter, 38, daughter of Abdur Rashid, all residents of Chakpara village in Trishal upazila.
Prosecution statements revealed that the dispute had existed for years between Hafizul Islam and Jashim Uddin over a plot of land. On 19 June, 2023, supporters of Jashim, armed with lethal weapons, attacked Hafizul’s house and assaulted Nurjahan Begum.
During the attack, Alamin, Hafizul’s nephew, tried to intervene to protect Nurjahan but was stabbed by the assailants. He died on the spot. Hafizul Islam later filed a case with Trishal Police Station, leading to the prosecution of the five convicted.
