Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has jailed five individuals, including an activist of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, for violating the electoral code of conduct in various parts of the metropolitan area.
The details were confirmed in a statement issued by DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman.
The jail terms were handed down through summary trials on Wednesday. In the Sutrapur area, a Jamaat worker identified as 63-year-old Habibur Rahman was caught red-handed while preparing to distribute cash.
Special Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman of Lalbagh Division conducted a summary trial at the scene and sentenced him to two days of imprisonment. Police seized 12 envelopes from his possession, each containing Tk500, totaling Tk6,000, which has been confiscated.
In another incident, the Special Metropolitan Magistrate of the Wari Division sentenced two individuals to one month and seven days of imprisonment, respectively, for loitering without a satisfactory reason.
Additionally, in the Motijheel Division, Special Metropolitan Magistrate Mohidur Rahman sentenced two individuals to 10 days in jail following a case at the Mugda Police Station.
The duo was detained by the public for making derogatory remarks about the police, and the sentence was delivered under Section 75 of the DMP Ordinance.
