Bangladesh Police FC sit prettiest at the top of Group B with six points from three matches. A draw against Kings sends them through to the knockout round, simple as that. They have also beaten Kings in each of their last two meetings, so the confidence in their camp is not without foundation.
Bashundhara Kings, however, carry five points and the weight of a title to defend. Only a win does the job for them. Drop points here and their route through the group becomes far more complicated, possibly terminal.
Over in Cumilla, Mohammedan SC find themselves in an almost identical points position to Kings, sitting on five points from three games. They face Arambagh, a side with nothing left to play for, which on paper reads as straightforward. But football rarely reads paper.
Win, and Mohammedan move to eight points and book their knockout ticket without needing to glance at another scoreline. Draw, and they spend the rest of the afternoon watching what happens at Kings Arena, fingers crossed and nerves fraying. This is a club of Mohammedan’s stature that simply cannot afford to stumble against the group’s bottom side.
Then there is Fortis FC, the group’s most dramatic spectator. They finished their four matches on five points and now sit and wait. Their only route through requires both Kings and Mohammedan to lose their matches by heavy margins, and Kings specifically need to lose by at least three goals for Fortis to leapfrog them on goal difference. That is not impossible, but it demands quite a lot from a Tuesday afternoon’s football.
Arambagh are already done and heading home regardless of today’s result. But they still carry real influence over who follows them out of the competition. A stubborn performance against Mohammedan could yet reshape the entire group.
