Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) is preparing for a significant transformation as the government signals a shift in how the country’s film infrastructure will operate. Information and Broadcasting Advisor Md Mahfuz Alam has announced that the FDC compound in Tejgaon will gradually become a research-driven hub, with all shooting activities moving to Kabirpur Film City.
The announcement was made on Tuesday evening during an inauguration event at FDC, where new facilities were launched, including a business automation system, a cine-archive, a renovated sound studio and a revamped fountain area.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mahfuz Alam outlined a plan to rebuild the country’s filmmaking ecosystem. He said that FDC would evolve into a space dedicated to research, development and creative planning, covering everything from screenwriting to distribution. According to him, Kabirpur Film City is expected to become the central location for all types of shooting.
The advisor also shared his ambition to see Bangladeshi cinema gain international recognition. He emphasised the need for stronger storytelling and higher production quality to ensure local films can compete on global platforms. Showcasing Bangladeshi narratives to the world, he said, would bring cultural prestige as well as industry growth.
Responding to the ongoing decline of traditional cinema halls, Mahfuz Alam revealed that the government is considering building cineplexes in major cities to revive cinemagoing habits and support new releases.
In a move that could reshape the national grant system for films, he announced that the long-standing divide between commercial and art films would be abolished. Future grants will be awarded solely on merit, with both mainstream and independent productions assessed by the same criteria.
Mahfuz Alam added that he hopes future administrations will continue to support these reforms in order to strengthen the local film landscape.
The event was chaired by FDC Managing Director Masuma Rahman, with Film Directors Association President Shahin Suman and actor Bapparaj also addressing the gathering. The evening concluded with a cultural performance.
