Fatima Rashid: From kidney failure to gold! Despite her commitment to a healthy lifestyle, complications arose, including preeclampsia during pregnancy and an acute kidney injury in 2022.
By January 2023, her kidney function had declined to critically low levels, necessitating placement on a transplant waiting list. On January 10, 2023, Fatima received a life-saving kidney transplant at Mediclinic City Hospital in Dubai, according to Middle East News.
Determined to reclaim her life, she embarked on an inspiring journey of recovery and athletic achievement. Within months, she completed a 4.5-kilometre run and returned to competitive sports.
Representing the United Arab Emirates at the 25th World Transplant Games in Dresden, Germany, Fatima showcased her resilience and athleticism. She clinched gold in the javelin throw and bronze in the 200-meter race, proudly raising the Bangladeshi flag to honour her roots.
Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Fatima is a passionate advocate for kidney health and mental well-being. She competes to demonstrate that strength encompasses not just physical endurance but also mental and spiritual resilience.
Fatima’s story is a powerful reminder that organ transplantation is not the end of life but the beginning of new opportunities and achievements.
