Police have arrested a man for alleged involvement with demanding money from Turkish citizen posing as National Security Intelligence (NSI) officer.
The arrestee’s name is Md Rubel Hossain, 38. He was arrested from Dhaka’s East Kazipara area of Mirpur on Saturday evening.
He said that Turkish Airlines officer Serkan Akan received a call from an unknown number pretending to be NSI while he was preparing to leave his home for work on August 31 around 9:51 am. The caller introduced himself as Assistant Director (AD) Abdul Muhin of NSI Gulshan Zone and said that he had called for his passport verification.
Serkan then spoke to his interpreter. The NSI AD introducer then took his passport number and date of birth and said that he would have to verify his passport and submit it to the SB. He would have to pay Tk5,000 for this work. Otherwise, the verification would be blocked, and he would have to pay Tk100,000, he said.
This official also said that when Serkan refused to pay the money, the NSI official introducer intimidated him in various ways. The matter was later reported to the Gulshan Police Station in writing through the Turkish Airlines authorities.
Later, police started the investigation into the matter and able to arrest the fraudster. During this time, a mobile SIM and various documents containing passport information of various people were recovered from his custody. Legal action has been taken against him.
