The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced candidates for 237 out of 300 seats for the upcoming National Parliamentary Election. However, the names of many heavyweight leaders are absent from the announced list.
For many of their expected constituencies, no names were declared. A storm of discussion is sweeping through the political arena regarding whether these heavyweight figures will not receive nominations at the last moment for those seats, and instead, allies in the coalition with BNP will get them.
The fate of several individuals hangs in the balance, including BNP Standing Committee member Selima Rahman, Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu (for Chuadanga-1 constituency), BNP central executive committee’s Joint International Affairs Secretary Barrister Rumeen Farhana (for Brahmanbaria-2), Nasir Uddin Ashim (for Dhaka-10), Advocate Asaduzzaman, BNP national executive committee’s Vice Chairman Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon, Rafiqul Alam Monju, Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, Abdus Salam, BNP Chairperson’s Advisers Ariful Haque Choudhury, Nilufar Chowdhury Moni, Helen Zerin Khan, Sultana Ahmed, and Nazimuddin Alam.
The party’s Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, announced the list at a press conference held at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Monday afternoon.
