The family of the victim has filed a murder case at the Bongshal Police Station regarding the killing of Jagannath University (JU) student and Chhatra Dal leader Jobayed Hossain.
Sources from the Bongshal Police Station indicate that the investigation has revealed a complex love conflict behind this murder. The accused, Mahir Rahman, had a long-standing 9-year relationship with his girlfriend Borsha. However, some time ago, Borsha developed feelings for Jobayed Hossain. This incident angered Mahir.
It is known that at one point during the relationship turmoil, Borsha initially rejected Mahir but later contacted him again, informing him that she no longer liked Jobayed. It was then that Borsha and Mahir planned to kill Jobayed.
During initial interrogation, Borsha denied involvement in the murder, but when confronted face-to-face with Mahir, they both confessed to the entire incident, as confirmed by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bongshal Police Station.
On Sunday afternoon, Jobayed Hossain, a student of the 2019-20 academic session in the Statistics Department of JU and a member of the university unit Chhatra Dal’s convening committee, was murdered while going to a tutoring session in Armanitola, Dhaka. Around 4:30pm, police recovered his body in a bloody state from the stairs of the “Raushan Villa” building in Armanitola’s Pani Pump Goli.
According to police sources, two young men were seen fleeing the scene in CCTV footage, although their faces were not clearly visible. After the incident, police took Borsha, the student he tutored, into custody for questioning. Later, based on her information, Mahir Rahman and three others were arrested.
DMP’s Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said, “Those involved in the murder have been identified. Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Md Nazrul Islam will provide details on this matter at the DMP Media Center around 11:45am on Tuesday.’
After the autopsy, Jobayed’s first janaza was held at the Jagannath University campus on Monday afternoon. Fellow students and teachers paid their respects to him there. The body was then taken to his village home for burial.
Jobayed was the President of the Cumilla District Student Welfare Council and was known among his university peers as a talented and polite student.
