The government plans to introduce the ‘Family Card’ on a pilot basis ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo said on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting at the Secretariat chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the minister said the Prime Minister wants to begin the programme as a pilot project before Eid.
Mintoo said the Family Card initiative was highlighted in detail in the ruling party’s election manifesto. The meeting discussed how the programme could be implemented.
When asked about the number of families to be covered initially, he said the programme is intended to be universal and will not have any restrictions.
“A committee has been formed. The programme may start with the ultra-poor. It will then expand to the poor and later to the middle class in phases,” the minister said.
