Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said that voting in Sherpur-3 and Bogura-6 constituencies is taking place in a fair and peaceful environment.
He made the remarks on Thursday after inspecting the law-and-order coordination cell at the Election Commission office in Agargaon ahead of the polls.
The CEC said “The commission has made all possible preparations to ensure that the elections in both constituencies are better than any previous polls and proceed without any shortcomings.”
He added “CCTV cameras are being used to closely monitor the voting process. All measures have been taken to maintain a peaceful environment, with special emphasis on Sherpur-3 due to its border location, where additional law enforcement personnel have been deployed. BGB, RAB, Ansar and other relevant forces are actively performing their duties.”
CEC Nasir Uddin said the commission has been observing the situation closely since the morning. Voters are turning up at centres peacefully and returning home after casting their ballots.
Overall, the environment remains calm, and efforts are underway to deliver a credible election in line with international standards, he added.
The by-election in Bogura-6 follows the vacancy of the seat after the 13th national parliamentary elections on 12 February. The general election in Sherpur-3 is being held due to the death of a contesting candidate. Voting in both constituencies continues uninterrupted from 7.30am to 4.30pm.
Three candidates are contesting in Bogura-6: Md Rezaul Karim Badsha of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Md Abidur Rahman of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, and Md Al-Amin Talukdar of the Bangladesh Development Party.
In Sherpur-3, the three candidates are Md Mahmudul Haque Rubel of BNP, Md Masudur Rahman Masud of Jamaat-e-Islami, and Md Mizanur Rahman of Bangladesh Socialist Party (Marxist).
