Tarun Ghosh, the National Film Award-winning art director and acclaimed painter, has died at the age of 73. He passed away late on Wednesday, April 8, following cardiac complications, according to filmmaker N Rashed Chowdhury. He is survived by his wife and son.
Born in Rajbari on August 20, 1953, Ghosh studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Dhaka, graduating in 1977, before completing his postgraduate degree at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in India.
Tarun Ghosh then began his career in academia in 1979 as one of the founding teachers of the Fine Arts Department at Rajshahi University. He later joined the Bangladesh National Museum in 1989, serving for over two decades and retiring as Keeper in 2012.
He was widely respected for his work in cinema, winning the National Film Award for art direction in ‘Kittankhola’. His notable credits include ‘Matir Moyna’, ‘Norshunder’ and ‘Chandrabati Kotha’. His most recent project was Sokhi Rongomala, directed by N Rashed Chowdhury.
Alongside his film work, Tarun Ghosh built a distinguished career as a painter, drawing inspiration from Bengali folk traditions, mythology and history. His celebrated ‘Behula’ series earned him the Asian Art Award.
