A fact-finding committee formed to investigate allegations against several prosecutors of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) will meet former chief prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam, Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said on Wednesday.
He said the committee will hold discussions with Tajul Islam to review the overall situation of the tribunal’s prosecution during his tenure.
“As he previously led the prosecution, it is necessary to understand what happened and what did not from his perspective,” he added.
Aminul Islam made the remarks while speaking to TIMES of Bangladesh on Wednesday.
The move comes amid allegations against several former prosecutors, including claims that then prosecutor Md Saimum Reza Talukder demanded money from the family of former MP ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury in exchange for securing bail in a crimes against humanity case linked to the July mass uprising in Chattogram.
Another prosecutor, Gazi MH Tamim, has also faced allegations raised by fellow prosecutor Sultan Mahmud.
The fact-finding committee was formed on 10 March by the Chief Prosecutor’s Office to investigate allegations of irregularities and corruption involving several prosecutors.
The chief prosecutor said Saimum Reza Talukder had already admitted over the phone to discussing the matter and has been summoned again by the committee.
He added that the committee is expected to submit its report within this month.
