Donald Trump has never been known for underselling himself. His latest boast? That he is TikTok’s biggest star and has even overtaken Taylor Swift in followers. It is the kind of headline that grabs attention—until the numbers enter the conversation.
Speaking during a White House event on 6 July, the US president declared that he had become the “number one” person on TikTok and claimed Taylor Swift was only 11th on the platform. He did not cite a source or explain where those rankings came from.
Publicly available data tells a very different story. According to Social Blade, a widely used analytics platform that tracks public social media statistics, Trump’s version of events simply does not add up.
Rather than sitting at the summit of TikTok, Trump is nowhere near the platform’s top 50 most-followed accounts. Social Blade estimates his account has around 16.7 million followers, placing him at roughly 188th globally. That is enough to make him the most-followed world leader on TikTok—but not its biggest celebrity.
Taylor Swift, meanwhile, comfortably stays ahead of him. While she also falls outside the platform’s top 50, her account has around 33.5 million followers—almost double Trump’s audience—and approximately 274.6 million likes, compared with Trump’s 121.8 million.
The actual TikTok leaderboard looks nothing like the one Trump described. Khaby Lame continues to dominate the platform with about 162.3 million followers. Charli D’Amelio follows with 159.2 million, MrBeast has 129.1 million, TikTok’s official account stands at 94.7 million, and Bella Poarch rounds out the top five with 92 million.
Trump’s claim that Swift ranks 11th also misses the mark. Social Blade’s publicly available figures show that an account around that position belongs to BTS, with roughly 80 million followers—well ahead of Swift’s total.
The president made the remarks while defending TikTok’s popularity in the United States. Referring to the platform as “Tic Tac,” he said fresh numbers released “about two days ago” had placed him at the top. However, no publicly available ranking supports that assertion.
So where does that leave the scoreboard? Trump may lead the world’s politicians on TikTok, but the platform’s biggest creators remain comfortably out of sight. On social media, bold claims can go viral. Follower counts, however, are far less flexible.
We can say the numbers have delivered the final word. If confidence alone counted as followers, Trump might indeed top TikTok. The numbers, however, tell another story. The claim may have gone viral, but it did not survive the fact check. Publicly available Social Blade data shows Trump is not TikTok’s most-followed account and does not have more followers than Taylor Swift.
