Facebook experienced a widespread service disruption on Sunday, with users across the world reporting difficulties accessing their accounts and using several of the platform’s core features.
The outage affected both desktop and mobile users, although many said the disruption was more severe on the web version of the social media platform.
According to outage-tracking service Downdetector, reports of Facebook-related problems surged sharply at around 10:39 am Eastern Time in the United States. The number of complaints jumped from just five to 3,555 within minutes, indicating a widespread service failure.
Users reported being unable to log into their accounts or access key Facebook services. Many also complained of difficulties uploading photos and videos, while others said they were unable to send messages through Messenger, the platform’s integrated messaging service.
Many users attempting to access Facebook were shown a message stating: “Account Temporarily Unavailable. Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes.”
Meta, Facebook’s parent company, had not issued an official explanation for the disruption or its cause at the time of reporting.
