A 75‑year‑old man was killed after being hit by a covered van in the capital’s Kakrail area on Sunday morning.
The deceased, Sirajul Islam of Matlab upazila in Chandpur, had been living with his family in Nayatola, Moghbazar.
Police said the accident occurred around 6:30am on the road adjacent to the Chief Justice’s residence. Sirajul was rescued in critical condition and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead around 10am.
His son, Md Swapan, said Sirajul had been suffering from mental health issues. He left home on Saturday night and did not return.
Swapan learned of the accident from police on Sunday morning and later identified his father’s body at DMCH.
Ramna Police Station Sub‑inspector Abul Khair confirmed the incident, saying that the van struck the elderly man near the Chief Justice’s official residence. The body has been kept in the hospital morgue for autopsy.
