Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal said the government will take initiatives to identify and resolve problems in areas worst affected by climate change, including Sherpur.

He said the government wishes to work jointly with non-governmental organisations and those connected with people at the grass-roots level.

Kamal made these remarks during a session on the second day of 30th anniversary celebration of Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) and Shonar Manush Shommilon 2026, held at a hotel in the capital on Wednesday.

The deputy speaker further noted that climate change is transforming the lives, livelihoods, and living conditions of people in the Haor region, where the use of vehicles such as battery-operated rickshaws is increasing.

He shared that he has been entrusted with the responsibility to assess necessary measures for the region so that he can play a leading role in resolving the issues faced by the people of Netrokona and the Haor area.

Speaking at the event, RMMRU Executive Director Tasneem Siddiqui outlined the goals, objectives, and rationale of forming the Parliamentary Caucus.

The executive director highlighted the critical importance of involving lawmakers, driving policy initiatives, and ensuring co-ordination among relevant stakeholders to address the challenges confronting climate-displaced populations.

Lawmaker Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury, who attended as a special guest, said behind every remittance lies a human story involving the hard work of a father far from home, the dream of a youth taking risks, and a family’s investment in education, healthcare, and a better future.

While describing remittance as a primary pillar of the economy, he asserted that the true standard of migration must be ensuring the dignity, security, and welfare of remittance earners.

For this reason, he advocated giving national priority to safe, fair, and orderly labour migration, alongside establishing a transparent and cost-effective recruitment process.

He further emphasized that migrants require accurate information, skills matching international demand, protection from exploitation, and necessary assistance upon returning home, while opportunities should be created for remittance-receiving families to transform this income into long-term security and productive investment.

State Minister for Disaster Management M Iqbal Hossain addressed the gathering as the guest of honour, while other members of the caucus also shared their views and experiences.

Through the caucus, it is expected to strengthen parliamentary-level discussions, policy-making initiatives, and co-ordination between relevant government and non-governmental organisations regarding climate change-induced displacement.

The initiative is also anticipated to play a role in giving importance in national policy-making to the rights, protection, and livelihood issues of climate-displaced and vulnerable people. The event marking RMMRU’s 30th anniversary was attended by lawmakers, researchers, representatives of development partner agencies, and delegates from various institutions working on migration and displacement issues.
